The Tak Laboratory at the University of Virginia
We are a team of scientists exploring the biology of bacteria and the viruses that infect them: the bacteriophages. Our primary focus is on the discovery and characterization of new molecular mechanisms by which bacteria defend themselves against phages, how phages overcome bacterial defenses, and how phage-bacteria conflict influences the molecular arms race, physiology, and evolution of bacteria. Our broader vision is to translate our findings to advance human health, agriculture, and scientific discovery. We use bacteriology, genetics, biochemistry, cellular imaging, bioinformatics, next-generation sequencing, protein engineering, and structural biology to explore these phenomena.
